This Is How to REALLY Waterproof Your Basement

I take you to our new build in Rhode Island and show you the secret of how to really waterproof a foundation. Wet or damp basements are a nightmare no one wants to deal with—especially a new homeowner. So here’s how we ensure a basement stays dry for years to come.

APPLY A WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE

Everything we do at NS Builders revolves around the concept of “intentionally crafted” design and construction. And foundations are no exception. A foundation can be easily waterproofed with a few extra hours of labor and precise application of a high-quality product.

The concrete footings are in and once the walls are poured, all of the exterior foundation walls will be coated with a waterproofing membrane product by Tremco—TREMproof 250GC. This polyurethane membrane can be applied to damp or green concrete. It’s easy to use—simply apply with a paint roller on an extension pole. It provides superior waterproofing protection to keep a basement dry and avoid a damp feel or odor.

WHY APPLY WATERPROOFING TO THE TOP OF THE FOOTINGS?

We’ve done something a little different on this project—we’ve actually applied the TREMproof to the top of the footings. We did this because of the capillary action—water or moisture traveling up into the porous concrete. The footings sit on soil, and soil has moisture. The moisture can be absorbed into the concrete by this process of capillary absorption.

Or course, there will be a slab and vapor barrier on top of the slab over the footings. That’s not the problem. It’s where the concrete wall comes down and sits in the middle of the footing that is concerning—if the footing is wicking moisture upwards. So, by applying the TREMproof to the top of the footings we are endeavoring to make sure there is a continuous barrier preventing any moisture from entering into the envelope of the house.
