Intentionally Crafted Details

I take you to two projects to check on progress and share a few examples of our “intentionally crafted” designs and execution. Attention to even small details is how NS Builders goes the extra mile (or, in the case of a closet door, the extra 1/4 inch) to make it perfect.

SUPER FLAT WALLS

When a homeowner says they want super flat walls—we give them super flat walls. So, to ensure that the wall surface will be ultra-flat and plumb, we go above and beyond the typical approach to plaster. Instead of using a 14-inch trowel back and forth, the team put in the extra effort and time to finish the plaster with a 7-foot plaster screed to really make sure the walls are plumb, coplanar, and flat.

THE POCKET DOOR

The pocket door between the bedroom and the bathroom practically begged us not to use hardware in keeping with the vibe of the rest of the suite. So, we decided to go with a bump open for this 2 ½” solid oak door with an aluminum honeycomb center to keep it flat. The tight reveal is really impressive, and all the hardware is buried up in the ceiling. So, here’s the killer detail that the homeowner may never notice, but we knew it just made sense. The door is actually not perpendicular to the opening—the door hits on a cant, and we wanted to make sure it had a positive flat stop. That meant that the slot sides on either side of the door in the closed position were actually two different sizes—one is 5/16” and the other is 9/16”. A micro detail, but it allowed us to achieve a perfect result.
