Insulation and Sound Attenuation at the Back Bay Brownstone

In this episode of Site Visit with NS Builders, I take you to the brownstone renovation in the Back Bay and catch you up to speed on our progress. It’s time to insulate (perfect timing as the Boston weather is turning decidedly colder), and I’ll explain how the insulation provides warmth and sound attenuation.

ROCKWOOL COMFORTBATT FOR WARMTH AND SOUND ATTENUATION

We’ve used ROCKWOOL Comfortbatt stone wool insulation on many of our projects with great success. It’s semi-rigid batt insulation with a flexible edge designed to compress as you insert it into walls, ceilings, floor frames, etc. And we’re using it on this project as well—primarily for sound attenuation (lessening or weakening sound as it travels). Because we have homes adjacent to this unit on either side and above us, we’re filling all of the cavities with an R13 Comfortbatt. We’re also doing the exterior walls, which are a full masonry wall, but we are still adding some Comfortbatt insulation in front for additional thermal protection.

HIDDEN BUT NOT LOST

Of course, the insulation will hide everything—wiring, speakers, you name it—and it could get “lost” really fast, causing a ton of frustration in trying to relocate those items. We avoided all of that by having a 3D scan done by Multivista. Everything was moved away from the walls, and Multivista shot multi points all the way around the space, giving us a 3D model. This is SUPER helpful because so much gets buried behind or under insulation. But now we can simply open the app and find exactly the vent, box, wiring, or speaker we’re looking for. Or, in the future, if the homeowner wants to add a shelf or plan a future project, we can use the app to figure out exactly where the studs are—it’s incredibly accurate.

It’s time to discover what NS Builders can intentionally design and build for you! Contact us today to get started on your custom dream home. Together, we can make it happen.
