Final Touches on the Southie Project

I take you on a walk-through of the almost finished project in South Boston—wrapping up the little details and final touches before the cleaners arrive. This project has turned out beautifully, and it’s the intentionally crafted design that NS Builders focuses on that makes all the difference.

YOU’D NEVER NOTICE IT UNLESS I TOLD YOU…

In the master bedroom with the Juliet balcony, the casing around the doors was tweaked to achieve the perfect balance and separation of the ceiling and the doors. The casing actually comes in a wider profile, but when we were framing, it was clear that it was going to be a super tight fit due to the ceiling height. We were working with literally fractions of an inch to get every inch of ceiling height that we could.

After careful consideration, we collectively decided to shrink that casing down to give an intentional line of separation. We wanted to celebrate the casing—it’s a great profile—and we didn’t want it to get lost in the ceiling. So, even though your eye would never register it, we shrunk it down all the way around; it is slightly smaller than the rest of the casing in the room. A tiny detail that delivers a huge impact!

THE BATHTUB FOUND IN THE BASEMENT

The homeowner wanted to respect the traditional elements of this home while incorporating modern details and style. For example, the marble steam shower screams modern design with the full-height glass and white cube bench. However, the homeowner found an old tub buried down in the basement and just knew it had to be given a second chance at life. So, we muscled it up here, worked with our plumber to find a way to make it code-compliant, drilled some holes, filled some holes, and had it refinished inside and out. With the awesome new hardware, the juxtaposition of the old school tub with the new shower creates the perfect balance.
