Detailed Roof Prep and Tapered Windows

In this episode of Site Visit with NS Builders, I take you back to our Needham project to check on all the work getting done in preparation for the slate roof. And I’ll show you why we added a secondary wall in the living room.

FINAL ROOF PREP

Before we install the beautiful gray DaVinci synthetic multi-width slate roof, there’s a punch list of detailed prep work that needs to be done. The entire roof has been covered with GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD. Next, we’ll install the gutter brackets for the future half-round gutters. We need to install sheet metal in all of our valleys. And we’ve been working with DaVinci regarding venting. We’re not spray foaming the roof; we are using ROCKWOOL Comfortbatt for roof insulation. We’ve made sure our soffits are completely vented—the vented cavities will allow air to go up, baffle above our wall plate, and then go up the roof and out the ridge vent like a traditional vented roof. With all the sweeping and curved details of this complex roof structure, we’ve been extremely intentional in ensuring all the detailed preparation work is done right.

TAPERED LIVING ROOM WINDOWS

In the living room, we’ve built a secondary wall—strictly aesthetic—beneath the fabulous punched window openings above. Building out a secondary wall allows us to give these windows some special treatment: The sides are tapered slightly, the bottom tapered much more aggressively, allowing the light coming in the windows to literally pour down into the room. The flared opening and final plastering will make the window openings look even larger than they are. Paired with the massive trusses soon to be placed, this living room is going to be quite the showstopper.

It’s time to discover what NS Builders can intentionally design and build for you! Contact us today to get started on your custom dream home. Together, we can make it happen.
