Designer and Builder Walk the Needham Project

In this episode of Site Visit with NS Builders, I catch up with Steve Tiek, the architectural designer for our Needham project. As we walk through the project, checking on progress as framing wraps up, we talk about some of the design details that are coming together to make this home phenomenal.

EUROPEAN MEETS COLONIAL STYLE

Steve and his team from Tiek Design Group flew in from Utah to visit the Needham site to do a full site walk-through with the homeowner and the NS Builders team.

NS Builders focuses on listening to our clients—finding out what matters most. And Steve Tiek operates the same way. The homeowners were really drawn to the European Cottage style, so Tudor made sense. But because we're in New England, Steve was able to combine the two styles—incorporating European style with Colonial architecture. Looking at the home, you can see the Colonial symmetry combined with sweeping roof lines and steeper gables that are more of a hallmark of a Tudor-style home. The curves and sweeping lines soften some of this home's square angles.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

As Steve walked around and throughout the home, he was excited to see the design details coming to life. For example, light was an extremely important element of this home. New England winters are long and dark; the homeowner really wanted to bring the light into the house. The south-facing windows capture the light as it moves through the day into the afternoon and evening, pouring sunlight into the house. And we made sure the rooms feel open, spacious, and tall—to take advantage of the light. Steve explained that they actually did a sun study—to see what the sun and resulting light would be throughout each season. Steve knew the design and our construction hit the mark when the homeowner accompanied him on the walk-through and gravitated to the sun hitting each room.

The results are stellar when you combine fantastic, forward-thinking design with superb craftsmanship!
