A Walk-Through Showcasing Design Details

In this episode of Site Visit with NS Builders, I take you on a detailed walk-through of the interior of this spectacular new home build in Rhode Island and share some of my favorite features.

GARAGE DETAILS

Typically the garage would be built slab-on-grade, but with a full-height basement under it and ledge issues, we could not get the house down low enough. So, the garage is elevated a bit higher than the street, which draws your attention to this beautiful home even more. The garage's interior will house all of the electric coming in (the meter is on the wall), the distribution center for our Tesla power wall, and the inverter for solar. The electric is fed into conduit up and across the breezeway and into the main house. Another cool feature of this garage is the loft above the garage door track that Julia designed. What would have been unusable space is now a handy storage loft.

HVAC DUCT PLACEMENT

It's all about designing and building with attention to detail—and that's precisely why we have the HVAC ducts placed as close to the windows as possible. That is where most of your heat loss is going to be. So the goal is to wash the windows and doors with heat and, if possible, center the ducts above the windows.

FIREPLACE FOR A PASSIVE-STYLE HOME

The living room area will have a stellar fireplace designed for a passive-style home. It has its own fresh air intake (in the floor is a 4-inch conduit that will come up into the bottom of the fireplace unit to give it fresh air). Remember—this is going to be a really airtight home. So we don't want to be sucking fresh air out of the living space; we want to have fresh air come in from the outside. Look up, and you’ll see where we've prepped with an 8-inch flue that goes up through the roof.
