A Living Room Designed to Impress

In this episode of Site Visit with NS Builders, I’ll show you a living room designed to impress—yet with enough cozy built in to make this a space the whole family will want to hang out. And I’ll explain how we’re reclaiming and putting to good use some old bricks.

THE TWO-STORY LIVING ROOM

If you were to Google the definition of “grand,” I’m pretty sure this living room is what would pop up first. Now that we’ve removed the temporary work platform above (that looked like a ceiling), you can really begin to see the massive living space this room affords. The living room is essentially square with a two-story design that allows multiple windows that ascend the wall to impressive heights. The windows at the top are getting special treatment—in between each window will be significantly-sized beautiful trusses we’ll custom fabricate. And on the opposite wall in this space is a slanted ceiling. A cozy gas fireplace with a reclaimed brick veneer will add warmth—literally and visually.

The overall feeling that this room evokes is a sense of grandeur—I know this was an important element for the homeowner, and I’m confident they’ll love it. Style, function, design—when it all comes together seamlessly, we know we’ve done our job right.

 RECLAIMED BRICKS

We’re reclaiming and repurposing old bricks for the living room fireplace veneer and chimney. Basically, you saw off the face of the brick and use it in ½ inch formation. This will continue up the chimney on through to the outside—on the exterior portion of the chimney, we’ll use a full brick. To finish it off, we’ll use custom-made copper chimney caps. Because we’re doing the gas insert, we will reap some cost savings. However, in the office in the front of the house we’re going to be doing the same gas fireplace insert, but it can also be used as a wood-burning fireplace.
